Gumtree – job search paradise?

Jan 17, 2023

Gumtree is not just for advertising that unused exercise bicycle or treadmill but is a widely used source when it comes to searching for jobs. You may even be surprised to know that they even have a wide selection of articles offering advice from making the right career choice to preparing for those all-important interviews. As they say, "Join the millions that have found their dream job."

We loved that they separated their advice into three main categories – I'm Applying, I'm Hiring, I'm Interviewing. Just because you are applying for jobs doesn't mean you won't gain key insights from the other categories. For example, under their I'm Hiring category, they provide advice on identifying the best candidate, as well as interview questions. Remember, preparation is key!

There are currently over 40 000 job-related advertisements on their website, and this easy-to-use and navigate site allows you to filter according to the following criteria:

·         Category

·         Location

·         Job type (contract, part-time etc.)

·         Advertised by (agency or private)

·         Employment Equity

Simply create a specific filter range and sign up to receive a daily email highlighting all the relevant positions within your area of interest to ensure you never miss out on an opportunity. After all, opportunities aren't renowned for coming around twice!

Gumtree is often underestimated from a job search perspective, but with both private and agency-sponsored posts, the options are endless. When applying for positions on Gumtree, specifically if they are private, it is important to remember that you need to be extra vigilant and on the lookout for scams. If it sounds too good to be true, it generally is. And if they need your banking information, we suggest you run a mile.

Gumtree has additional functionality whereby you can post your own profile, enabling you to be your own recruitment agency. You simply need a catchy description to make you stand out from the crowd, and potential employers or agencies can contact you via email or call you directly, depending on your preference. Then it's time to send them your incredibly professionally designed CV!

All that's left to do is for you to create a list of your preferences and sign up for that daily mail. Nothing beats job searching from the comfort of your couch accompanied by a great cup of coffee, so grab your laptop or download their app. Your dream job may just be a click away!
