Staying productive while looking for your dream job

Feb 7, 2023

Searching for a job can be a lengthy process, and it is very easy to become despondent. It is key to remember not to take the lack of response or rejection personally. Yes, we know it's easier said than done, but keeping a positive outlook is crucial for your success.

A positive state of mind is far more likely to see you succeed during the interview process. So get up off your chair and give yourself a pep talk!

Routines are your best friend

Life dramatically changes when you don't have a job, as your usual daily routine has ceased to exist. It may be tempting to stay in your pyjamas and watch Netflix all day, but you have a job to find, so it's time for a new routine

Create a new routine for yourself; after all, your new job is finding a job! Get up at the same time, jump in the shower, have breakfast, and start researching job sites, recruitment agencies, LinkedIn, etc. Set yourself attainable goals and targets for each day.

Time to upskill

There is no better time than now to upskill, and upskilling doesn't have to translate into taking expensive courses. There are so many free resources you can take advantage of, so best you slot in a study hour or two into your routine.

If you're unsure where to start, look at the roles you are applying for and see if there are any skills you need to gain or attributes you need to improve on.

Personal Branding

This is the perfect time to clean up your personal brand. Recruiters and potential employers will often search and look at your social media to better understand who you are. Have a look at your social media through a new pair of eyes and ask yourself if it is really portraying how you want to be seen.

Freelancing

Freelancing has never been easier than with the multitude of online platforms like Fiverr, which are easily accessible. While you wait for that dream job, you may as well set up a profile and give it a go, as someone out there is looking for your skill. These platforms have everything from writers and graphic designers to virtual private assistants.

That perfect job is just around the corner, but in the meantime, you can upskill yourself, research interview techniques and questions, and ensure your brand reflects who you are. Remember to be kind to yourself and don't stay in your pyjamas, no matter how tempting!
